Lasix 20 mg is an injectable drug manufactured by Aventis Pharma Limited and containing Furosemide, a substance that belongs to a class of drugs known as loop diuretics, which will cause the body to excrete water as well as potassium, sodium and chloride. Furosemide is primarily used for the treatment of two conditions: hypertension and edema. It is the first medication in most people with edema due to congestive heart failure. It is also sometimes used in the management of severe hypercalcemia in combination with adequate rehydration. Among athletes and bodybuilders it is used to drop water weight before the competitions. Injectable Lasix comes in boxes containing 5 ampoules (20 mg/2 mL).
Lasix is taken by bodybuilders shortly before competitions and contests in order to excrete excessive, mostly subcutaneous, water and to offer their muscle a hard, defined and ripped appearance. There are also cases when athletes often use Lasix to lose weight and to compete in a lower weight class. Diuretics such as Lasix give the bodybuilder possibility to display muscle striations and veins, which are usually hidden. However it should be taken with precaution, because the long term use of Lasix may lead to several organs failure or even lethal consequences.
The dosage and method of administration of Lasix vary in different individuals, dependent on the desired goals and condition of the athlete. Tablets are the most common form of administration but injections are also used by bodybuilders. The injectable form of Lasix is the most potent one. It can become active in a matter of minutes and has a drastic effect, but it is as well very dangerous. The usual injected dosage is between 10-40 mg. A higher dosage would be very dangerous for the organism. Since Lasix has a considerable effect on electrolyte and potassium levels, it is recommended to combine it with a potassium sparing agent like Aldactone (spironolactone).
Lasix is a dangerous compound if not sticking to the right dosage or using it for a long time. The extended use may lead to depletion of potassium (hypokalemia), sodium (hyponatremia), magnesium (hypomagnesemia), and calcium (hypocalcemia) and an increase in blood bicarbonate due to significant chloride loss. Most common side effects that may occur while using this compound are: pancreatitis, jaundice, anorexia, oral and stomach irritation, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, anemia, decreased white cell or blood platelet count, dermatitis, rash, skin itching and sensitivity to light, low blood pressure, high blood sugar levels nausea, vomiting, hearing loss, numbness or tingling of the extremities, vertigo, dizziness, headache, blurred vision or other visual disturbances.
